Cultural events to shine a light on the Battle of Kinsale

The Kinsale Cultural and Heritage Society (KCHS) will this month mark the 425th anniversary of the Battle of Kinsale with two special events.

The commemorative events will take place across two weekends, and aim to shine a light on the international significance of the 1601 battle.

The programme will begin on September 19 with a ‘1601 Living History Display’ along the Short Quay in Kinsale town.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience life in early 17th-century Ireland through historical encampments, military displays, and living-history demonstrations.

The following weekend, on September 26, the society will host a major Battle of Kinsale Seminar at St Multose Church, featuring a distinguished panel of historians.

Confirmed speakers include Dr Hiram Morgan and Dr James O’Neill from University College Cork; Dr Ruth Canning, Maynooth University, and Dr Igor Perez Tostado of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Spain.

Local historian Fergal Browne said the society is “really excited about the upcoming events”.

“In particular, securing some of the most eminent historians as part of our seminar at St Multose Church,” Mr Browne said.

“It is very rare that you get four historians of this calibre in the same venue, speaking on such an important historical topic.

“One that had such a profound effect not just on Irish politics, but on the world stage too.

“We could not host two such weekends without the support of the local business community. We would also like to pay a special thanks to University College Cork and Cork County Council for their support.”

Chairperson of the Kinsale Municipal District, independent councillor Alan Coleman said the events help promote Kinsale’s rich cultural heritage.

“They will also give an important shot in the arm to local businesses, with an expected influx of people coming to the town,” Mr Coleman said.
