Works of Cork scribe Cónal Creedon to be celebrated at Culture Night event

The works of one of Cork’s favourite writers are to be celebrated in the city’s oldest house this Culture Night.

An annual national event, Culture Night invites people to come together for free cultural discovery, creativity and connection.

The event is presented on Leeside by Cork City Council and offers the opportunity to access, explore and enjoy unusual events and spaces.

One of the many popular venues for young and old on the night is Civic Trust House, the early Georgian house at 50 Pope’s Quay, which is home to many of Cork’s cultural organisations.

It is the oldest house in Cork and is considered by many to be one of the finest historic buildings in the city.

Nicki ffrench Davis has been building manager at Civic Trust House since 2006, and oversees its day-to-day running. She described Culture Night as “an annual highlight” there.

“We love welcoming first-time visitors and old friends to experience the rich atmosphere of this historic house and get a taste of what happens here these days, usually behind closed doors,” she said.

“This year will be special as we celebrate 20 years at the house with our first ever artist-in-residence, Cónal Creedon.”

Award winner

A novelist, playwright and documentary filmmaker, Mr Creedon became, in 2024, the first Irish artist to receive the prestigious Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts.

Culture Night this year is on Friday, September 18, and from 6.30pm, Mr Creedon and Ms ffrench Davis will welcome visitors to the Civic Trust House.

At 7.30pm, the Actors Lab will offer a work-in-progress performance. Founded by Paul Wilkins in February 2026 at Civic Trust House, the Actors Lab initiative offers drop-in professional actor training.

At 8pm, the Gearr Short Film Festival will launch, and at 9pm, there will be a celebration of Cónal Creedon’s work, with a selection of short performances and readings with actors Mark D’Aughton, Dominic MacHale, Áine Ní Laoghaire and Alison Teahan.
