Medal Mash-Up exhibition opened at Cork city library

A rare exhibition of sporting medals was officially opened recently at Mayfield Library by Lord Mayor of Cork Damian Boylan.
The exhibition material was assembled by Jim Ryan and Danny O’Neill and covers 25 sports including athletics, boxing, hurling, gymnastics, karate, and swimming, road bowling and tug-o-war.
All-Ireland senior hurling features with a medal from the 1978 Cork team victorious over Kilkenny.

A senior football example comes from the 1990 double winning team, with handball and camogie medals also on display. Among the medals in the exhibition are those of Cathriona Foley, UCC lecturer, who captained Cork in 2008.
Unusual items include a 1986 Buffalo to Niagara Falls marathon medal, Tailteann Games medals. and a Notts County 4th Division winner’s tankard.
Medal Mash-Up, runs at Mayfield Library for the rest of August and in September.
