Cork County Council presents its anti litter awards to local communities

Cork County Council’s anti litter challenge awards has recognised 65 villages for their efforts to keep their communities litter free.

The initiative, which was established in the mid 1990s, aims to support local communities in their efforts to deal with litter. It also allows Cork County Council the opportunity to work with voluntary groups in a common collective purpose.

The awards were presented recently at Mallow for the North Cork division, at County Hall for the Southern Division, and at Clonakilty for the Western Division.

Large and small villages were presented with their awards and recognised for their important work, sharing prize money of more than €16,000. Among the winners were Castletownroche, who finished in first place in the large villages section in North Cork. Glanworth came in second, with Kildorrery and Banteer finishing joint third in this category.

The small villages section in North Cork saw Knocknagree and Coolagown coming in joint first, with Lismire finishing in third place.

Castletownroche also picked up the best improver accolade in this region.

In the South Cork region, Saleen and Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh came away as the joint winners in the large villages section, with Rostellan coming in third spot.

First prize in the small villages section was split between Ré na nDoirí and Rylane/Seiscne. Finishing in third place was Ballymore/Walterstown.

Killeagh secured the best improver awarded in the South Cork area.

In the West Cork section, Ballinspittle emerged as the victors in the large villages category, with Union Hall coming in second place and Durrus finishing in third.

The small villages category in this region saw nothing between the participants, with Drinagh, Lislevane and Newcestown all finishing as joint winners.

The best improver award in West Cork went to Timoleague.

Mayor of the County of Cork Bernard Moynihan said the success of the anti litter challenge “is a testament to the dedication of community groups and volunteers who work tirelessly to keep their villages clean and welcoming.”
