Mayfield parishes celebrate Sr Brenda’s 100th birthday

A nun with the Little Sisters of the Assumption on the northside of Cork city celebrated her 100th birthday last week, at a special surprise Mass surrounded by friends and sisters from the order.

The Mayfield Family of Parishes organised the Mass for Sr Brenda O’Sullivan at Our Lady Crowned Church.

During the Mass, Sr Brenda was presented with a special Papal Blessing, and a bouquet of flowers from the parish and community.

Bishop Fintan Gavin sent her a special birthday message, saying that as Sr Brenda celebrates this remarkable milestone, he prays that “the Lord will continue to bless her with his peace, joy, and good health.”

Fr Charlie Kiely of Mayfield parish said: “Sr Brenda is an inspiration to all, for where she is blessed with good health and that she lives a very independent life with attendance at Mass daily.”

During the day, Fine Gael councillor Damian Boylan, Lord Mayor of Cork, and Bishop Emeritus John Buckley paid Sr Brenda a visit to honour her special day.

“Sr Brenda is an incredible woman who gave so much over her lifetime as a nurse in West Kerry, Whitechurch, and Ethiopia,” said Mr Boylan.

“It was a privilege to meet her, and I wish her more years of happiness surrounded by her many friends.”
