Smell from Ballinure waste water pump to be monitored by Uisce Éireann
The project was announced at a recent briefing between Cork City Council and the water utility company.
Uisce Éireann has said that Mahon will benefit from mobile odour-monitoring units in the coming weeks to combat smells from the Ballinure header chamber.
The units, known as 'sulfiloggers', are small devices used to measure levels of hydrogen sulphide, and will be used to monitor and eliminate smells produced by the wastewater pump.
The project was announced at a recent briefing between Cork City Council and the water utility company.
A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said crews are “actively investigating the intermittent odour issues reported” in the Mahon, Blackrock, and Ballinure area.
“We understand the impact this is having on the local residents and we appreciate your patience while these investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
“A site inspection was carried out by Uisce Éireann crews, and during the inspection, no odours were detected. The sewer network appeared clean and functioning satisfactorily.
“This suggests that the source of the odour is likely associated with the Ballinure header chamber,” they added.
“To ensure a thorough investigation, we will organise installation of an odour monitoring device – SulfiLogger - at the Ballinure header chamber site.
“This device will allow us to capture detailed data over a period of time to better understand the source and nature of the issue.
“We will continue to monitor and review this data over the coming weeks.”
Labour Party councillor for the Cork city South East ward, Peter Horgan, said he has been engaging with Uisce Éireann “for months, seeking decisive action to address the wastewater odour affecting residents in Ballinure, Mahon and the wider Blackrock area”.
"Mahon will now benefit from this technology, eliminating the smell that has plagued residents in the area for a number of years. " said Mr Horgan.
“A dedicated manager is now in place, and additional staff are being recruited.
“I intend to continue advocating for the people of Mahon and Blackrock, so they can breathe clean air without persistent odours affecting their quality of life."
