Cork County Council has granted planning permission for a Youthreach facility in Macroom, on the site of the former post office on Main St in the town.

In recent days, Youthreach Macroom received planning permission for the proposed change of use of part of the ground floor and all of the first floor of the former post office to a Youthreach education centre. This includes permission for proposed internal alterations and all associated works.

James Lawless, the higher education minister, in a written response earlier this year to Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan, said that Cork Education and Training Board (ETB) submitted a lease application for the property in Macroom to his department for consideration in December 2025.

Mr Lawless said that Cork ETB, in conjunction with Solas, worked to identify an alternative location for Youthreach in Macroom that meets modern building and environmental standards and which supports a safe learning environment.

The premises will provide improved facilities and better accessibility and space to enhance Youthreach and wider FET provision in the area.

Cork Fine Gael senator Eileen Lynch said that the Youthreach facility will be a lasting investment in the future of young people across Macroom and the wider Cork North-West area.

“This project sends a strong message that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed and to reach their full potential,2 she said.

“I look forward to seeing the new Youthreach building become a reality and to the positive impact it will have for generations to come.”
