Mallow General Hospital has welcomed the first patients to 24 newly completed rooms delivered as part of a hospital expansion plan.

The new single occupancy inpatient rooms bring the total inpatient capacity at Mallow General Hospital up to 95 beds.

Mallow General Hospital was awarded more than €7m as part of the HSE capital investment plan in 2025, with the funding used to fit out and provide 24 inpatient beds in accordance with the acute inpatient bed capacity expansion plan.

The new beds are expected to ease pressure on the acute hospital system and improve access to inpatient services for patients in the region.

Sonya Cotter, HSE manager for Cork North and East said welcoming patients into the new single rooms is a significant milestone for the hospital.

“This expansion allows us to care for more people in a modern, private environment while supporting safer, more efficient care delivery.

"Increasing our inpatient capacity strengthens our role within the community, which has always been hugely supportive of the local hospital.”

The new rooms are phase two of a broader extension project. Phase one, which was completed in 2023, delivered 48 single occupancy inpatient rooms.

Labour Cork North Central TD Eoghan Kenny described the expansion as “a hugely important milestone for healthcare services in North Cork and across the wider Munster region".

“The opening of these new inpatient beds marks a very positive day for Mallow General Hospital and for the communities it serves."

"I want to acknowledge the outstanding dedication and professionalism of the staff at Mallow General Hospital, who continue to provide exceptional care under increasing pressure.

“Our community deserves strong, accessible healthcare services and today’s announcement is an important step forward.”
