Call for increased front-line garda presence in Cork city suburb
Out of the near 200 gardaí who were attested as sworn members of An Garda Síochána during a ceremony in Templemore earlier this month, only two recruits were assigned to stations in Cork.
Labour Party councillor for the Cork city South East ward, Peter Horgan has said that an increased number of garda recruits must be allocated to the Blackrock division due to increased population, continued congestion and anti-social behaviour.
Out of the near 200 gardaí who were attested as sworn members of An Garda Síochána during a ceremony in Templemore earlier this month, only two recruits were assigned to stations in Cork.
Of the two, one garda will be stationed at Anglesea St, and the other will be stationed in Midleton.
Mr Horgan said that while there was an allocation for the city, it has “not addressed the significant resource issue facing front line gardaí in Blackrock.”
“We can have all the safety plans in the world but, if we do not have boots on the ground in our communities, criminality will fester," said Mr Horgan.
“I’ve asked the previous commissioner and this commissioner to act for the people of Blackrock and I again implore them to do a major allocation to the suburbs.”
