Labour Party councillor Peter Horgan has reiterated that garda stations in Douglas and Blackrock need systematic allocations of frontline gardaí to deal with growing populations, continued congestion issues and anti-social behaviour impacting residents.
The Labour councillor was critically of the decision to only allocate two gardaí to Cork out of 200 that recently passed out at Templemore.
“We had the high visibility allocation for the city centre but that has not addressed the significant resource issue facing front line gardaí in Douglas and Blackrock,” said Cllr Horgan, “This is a critical time in how those two stations go forward. I was informed that plans were afoot to expand their opening hours once more resources were given.
“Those resources have not been given. We must protect the stations here as a matter of priority and of public safety confidence.
“We can have all the safety plans in the world but if we do not have boots on the ground in our communities the criminality will fester.
“I’ve asked the previous commissioner and this commissioner to act for the people of Douglas and Blackrock and I again implore them to do a major allocation to the suburbs.”
