The offence of urinating on the floor of a garda custody cell was deplored by a district court judge who sentenced one such culprit to five months in prison for causing damage in this fashion.
Judge Mary Dorgan said she took a very poor view of this kind of criminal damage offence at garda stations as she sentenced 28-year-old Jordan Murphy of Cork Simon Community at Cork District Court.
The defendant pleaded guilty to charges of being so intoxicated that he was a danger to himself or others earlier that day and later damaging the holding cell.
On another date he stole an Armani tracksuit at JD Sports on Patrick Street.
Judge Dorgan sentenced Jordan Murphy to five months for the criminal damage and a concurrent three-month term for the shoplifting charge.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis said the accused had 78 previous convictions including counts for theft, criminal damage and being drunk and a danger.
Sgt. Davis said: “Gardai received reports of a male harassing shoppers and being drunk at Oliver Plunkett Street, on March 16.
“Gardaí observed Jordan Murphy and approached him. He was stumbling and had glassy eyes. When spoken to, he admitted he had taken tablets.
“While in custody at the Bridewell garda station Jordan Murphy told gardaí that he was going to urinate in the cell.
“He did a short time later and was charged with causing criminal damage.”
Solicitor Frank Buttimer said the accused had a key-worker in the Simon Community who was helping him access drug rehabilitation against a background difficulty of heroin addiction.
