Dónal Gallagher, brother of famed rock star and guitarist Rory, will be honoured by the Open University for his contribution to music, culture, and community. The ceremony will take place at Croke Park today.

A Cork music figure and cultural ambassador is to receive an honorary doctorate from the Open University today.

Rory Gallagher’s brother Dónal will be honoured at a ceremony in Croke Park for his contribution to music, culture, and community over more than six decades.

Raised in Cork, he grew up immersed in blues, folk, and early rock n’ roll.

As manager to his brother, Dónal played a central role in the life of one of Ireland’s greatest musicians.

Widely regarded as Ireland’s first major rock star, Rory was regularly voted among the greatest guitarists of all time and influenced generations of musicians across the world.

He paved the way for all who followed.

Dónal said he was very moved that the Open University was honouring him.

“To be recognised in this way, particularly among this year’s graduates, means a great deal to me, and the wider Gallagher family,” he said.
