Barrs into camogie championship quarter-finals after win over Glen

St Finbarr’s are through to the quarter-finals of the SE Systems Cork camogie championship after their win over Glen Rovers at Castle Road on Thursday night.
The Barrs were the better side, but despite what the scoreline suggests they were made battle all the way to the end by the Glen.
The only concern for the Barrs was Gemma O’Connor going off injured early in the second-half and they hope she will be fit for the quarter-final next weekend.
The losers had their Cork star, Emma Murphy, in top form, along with Sophie O’Sullivan and Sarah Murphy.
But the Barrs were simply too good, led by their Cork stars Sorcha McCartan, Orlaith Cahalane and Aoife O’Neill, with Liz O’Donovan also outstanding.
Murphy opened the scoring for the Glen from a free, with Orlaith Cahalane replying at the other end for the Barrs.
Sorcha McCartan put the Barrs in front, after five minutes, a lead they never lost from here to the end.
With the wind at their backs the Barrs increased their lead, with Nicole Olden on target, to make it 0-3 to 0-1, before the Glen were awarded a penalty.
Murphy was fouled and Denise Luby came forward from goal go take it, but her effort went narrowly wide.
Liz O’Donovan and McCartan increased the Barrs lead, before they had their first goal chance.
Cahalane played Eimear Hurley in but her shot went narrowly wide.
But it wasn’t long before the Barrs found the back of the net, with Ciara Golden setting up Cahalane to score, to make it 1-5 to 0-1.
McCartan added another, before they got their second goal, this time Aoife Byrne finding the top corner as they led by 2-7 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.
Golden, McCartan and Ella Wigginton Barrett added points, before Murphy pointed another free for the Glen.
She added two more to reduce the deficit as they trailed by 2-9 to 0-4 as half-time approached.
Late on Cahalane scored her second point of the half to see the Barrs in control by 2-10 to 0-4 at the break.
Murphy got the first point of the second-half, with Eimear Hurley replying for the Barrs, before Cahalane got the Barrs third goal.
With 36 minutes gone McCartan got their fourth goal and two minutes later she added their fifth, to make it 5-11 to 0-5. Murphy hit back with two points for the Glen, before Byrne scored for the winners.
Leanne O’Sullivan scored the Glen’s eight point, with McCartan hitting two at the other end, to make it 5-14 to 0-8.
Byrne and Cahalane added points, with McCartan adding another.
Murphy and Sophie O’Sullivan scored for the Glen, with McCartan rounding off the scoring as the Barrs ran out comfortable winners.
They now go through with the Glen facing into a relegation game.
In the other game in this group Cloughduv got the better of Éire Óg by 1-9 to 0-5 to also advance to the quarter-finals.
