Cork gardaí arrest five motorists in 24 hours for drug-driving

“Drug-driving is not just illegal – it’s life-threatening,” the spokesperson said.

Five motorists were arrested in Cork within a 24-hour period this weekend for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Members of the Cork County Roads Policing Unit and Mallow District Community Engagement Gardaí were “out in force” over the weekend performing high visibility checkpoints and patrols throughout the Mallow Garda District.

As a result, between Saturday evening and Sunday evening, five motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

In a post shared on social media, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said this is “an alarming figure given that this same 24-hour period is when most fatal collisions occur on our roads”.

“Drug-driving is not just illegal – it’s life-threatening,” the spokesperson said.

“Even small amounts can seriously impair reaction times and co-ordination.

“If you drive under the influence, you're risking your future – and someone else's life.”
