Mercy University Hospital in Cork's city centre has announced that its emergency department has temporarily closed due to flooding.

The closure is to “allow for essential maintenance and to ensure the safety of patients and staff”, a spokesperson said.

It comes after heavy rainfall in Cork city this afternoon, and earlier this week.

A hospital spokesperson said: “Mercy University Hospital is working diligently to restore full functionality to the Emergency Department as quickly as possible.

“Updates on the reopening will be provided as soon as they are available.”

They advised individuals requiring urgent medical attention to consider alternative care options such as a GP, pharmacy or local injury units for non-emergency medical issues.

In the event of an emergency or life-threatening condition, contact emergency services by phoning 112 or 999, the spokesperson said.
