A community information meeting is being held to address water quality in the Blackwater River, following on from a large fish kill last August.
Hosted by the Local Authority Waters Programme (Lawpro), the meeting will take place on Wednesday January 28 at 7.30pm in the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow.
Primarily the meeting will explore options to establish a “Friends of the Blackwater River” catchment management group, to provide a community platform to raise awareness of water quality and to help restore, protect and enhance the Blackwater River.
Representatives from Lawpro will host a facilitated question and answer session, with representatives from Cork County Council also attending.
Cork Labour Party TD Eoghan Kenny told that the upcoming meeting regarding the Blackwater River is a positive and important step forward.
“I hope this meeting will mark the beginning of a strong, united effort to take stewardship of our dear Blackwater.
"Community involvement will be key to its long term protection and sustainable development.
“I am glad that Lawpro has engaged extensively on this process and are supporting a collaborative and community driven approach.”
Barry Deane, Lawpro’s regional co-ordinator in the south west added:
“This community meeting is a chance for local people in Cork to take an active role in protecting the Blackwater River.
“By working together, we can develop practical solutions to improve water quality in the river for both wildlife and the local community.
“We encourage community groups, anglers, and locals to come to the meeting, share their knowledge and be part of the effort to restore and enhance this important waterway.”
