The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is asking people across Cork to consider giving blood as a new year resolution for 2026.

Paul McKinney, the director of donor services and logistics at IBTS, said they are in need of all blood groups, in particular types A, B and O negative.

“Stocks are currently very low for these blood groups, at around three days’ supply,” said Mr McKinney.

“This call for donations follows a higher than usual number of cancellations by donors due to seasonal illnesses, holiday disruptions and poor weather, as well as a rise in demand for blood from hospitals.

“This is affecting our ability to collect enough of the right blood type.”

Mr McKinney said that more than 17% of all donations made to hospitals in December were of the O negative blood type.

“Hospitals are ordering more O negative blood than expected, with over 1,700 units (17.2%) of all blood issued to hospitals in December alone being of this blood group,” said Mr McKinney.

“Many blood donors who may not have donated in a while are being urged to consider making it their new year resolution, and book their next appointment now.”

Anyone with a scheduled appointment is being asked to keep it if they are fit and well, and any donors who don’t have an appointment are asked to please call 1800 731137 or go to www.giveblood.ie and book an appointment.
