A garda chief superintendent who has, for the past four years, been in charge of the Garda National Protective Services Bureau (GNPSB), has been appointed head of policing in the Cork City Garda Division.
Chief Superintendent Colm Noonan was appointed by Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly this week, succeeding former chief superintendent Tom Myers, who retired as head of the city division last month and was hailed by Taoiseach Micheál Martin as “an exceptional leader”.

The appointment of Chief Supt Noonan marks a return to Anglesea Street Garda Station for the Fermoy native, who has also previously served in Dublin and Templemore, and also worked as a superintendent in Midleton and Gurranabraher.
During his time as head of the GNPSB, Chief Supt Noonan worked extensively with Mary Crilly, founder of the Sexual Violence Centre Cork, who has welcomed his appointment as head of policing in the city.
“I’ve known Colm since his early days as a young guard in Cork, and I’ve always found him very good, and especially sympathetic to victims of sexual assault,” said Ms Crilly.
“I’m delighted to hear that he’s been appointed, and he will be a worthy successor to Tom Myers, who did great work.”
