It has been another busy and uplifting week in our city, filled with activities that remind us of the strength of community and the pride we share in Cork.

The festive season is well underway, and I have had the privilege of attending and leading many turning-on-of-lights ceremonies across the city.

Among them, the Lough Crib stands out as a time-aged tradition that is especially close to my heart.

It brings back fond memories of my youth, when the simple joy of gathering around the crib and seeing the lights sparkle was a highlight of Christmas.

I want to extend my congratulations to our Council management, our Parks Department and our dedicated electricians, whose hard work has ensured that Cork is illuminated beautifully this year. Their efforts have brought light and cheer to every corner of the city.

This week also afforded me the honour of hosting a civic reception for the legend that is Patrick “Hoggy” Horgan, following his retirement from inter-county hurling. Hoggy’s career with Cork has been nothing short of extraordinary. He is the all-time top scorer in the history of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, a record that speaks to his skill, consistency, and dedication.

Beyond the statistics, Hoggy has been an inspiration to generations of young hurlers, embodying the spirit of perseverance and pride in the red and white jersey. It was a privilege to celebrate his achievements and to thank him on behalf of the people of Cork.

Another highlight was hosting the Lord Mayor’s Gala Christmas Concert at City Hall. This annual event is always a special occasion, showcasing some of Cork’s finest musical talents.

The evening was filled with festive cheer, beautiful performances, and a strong sense of community. Importantly, it also provided us with the opportunity to raise funds for three Cork-based charities: Alzheimer’s Society Cork, Shine a light and Cork Samaritins. Supporting these organisations, which do such vital work, was a proud moment for all involved.

Finally, I was delighted to hold a reception for Cian Ducrot, whose achievements have brought Cork to the world stage. Cian has risen to international prominence as a singer-songwriter, with his debut album reaching number one in Ireland and the UK. His heartfelt lyrics and powerful performances have resonated with audiences across the globe.

We are immensely proud of him – not only for his musical success but also for the way he represents Cork with humility and passion.

It has truly been a week of celebration, tradition, and pride in our people. Cork shines brightly this Christmas season, thanks to the contributions of so many.
