Christmas lights turned on as Cork Airport prepares for 217k travellers

Cork Airport has “decked the arrivals halls” as the Lord Mayor of Cork and Lady Mayoress switched on the airport’s Christmas lights, marking the start of the festive period.

This December, 217,000 passengers will fly to and from Cork Airport, rounding off its best year of 3.4m passengers. December 18 to 22 will be the busiest.

Entertainment at the lighting ceremony was provided by the pupils of Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh, from Bishopstown. The pupils were the first of 1,200 performers who will take to the special Christmas stage on the ground floor of the terminal building.

Between now and December 23, the airport will host performances from primary and secondary school children from across Cork, together with orchestral ensembles, traditional music groups, choral societies, charities, and community choirs.

Extensive preparations have been made to create a festive ambience for departing and arriving passengers. Christmas decorations have been installed throughout the building by the airport’s asset care team.

Cork Airport will also feature in Cork City Council’s Corkmas activities, with giveaways for arriving passengers between December 19 and 22, in partnership with Cork’s RedFM.

Lord Mayor of Cork Fergal Dennehy said that Christmas at Cork Airport “is such a special time”.

“As families reunite with loved ones ahead of the festive season, it was an honour to switch on the Christmas lights at the airport today. I’m especially pleased that Cork City Council will be working with Cork Airport as part of our ‘Corkmas’ activities, which will add a very welcoming touch for those travelling home to Cork this December.”

Niall MacCarthy, managing director at Cork Airport, added: “Christmas is really our favourite time of the year, where we get a chance to interact more personally with our passengers, as they travel in and out for the festive season.

“The warmth and joy of the choirs make Cork Airport a really special place to travel through, and work in, at this time of year. Thanks to all the kids, adults, and community groups for taking part.”

Passengers intending to travel this December are advised to arrive at Cork Airport at least 90 minutes before a flight is to depart and allow ample time if checking-in of a bag.

If travelling with gifts or presents, passengers are advised not wrap them as they may be subject to an inspection. Christmas crackers are not permitted to be taken onboard an aircraft.
