A Cork-based charity which has, for two decades, been helping people living with the aftermath of the worst nuclear accident in history, is holding its annual Christmas craft fair this Sunday.
On Saturday, April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant near Pripyat in Ukraine, the No 4 reactor exploded, releasing radiation 30 to 40 times the amount released by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The after-effects of the disaster are being felt to this day.
The Greater Chernobyl Cause was founded in 2002 by Cork woman Fiona Corcoran, and its efforts have resulted in the building and refurbishment of orphanages and hospices, the donation of vital domestic appliances and medical equipment, and provision of shelter for vulnerable street children.
The charity’s annual Christmas craft fair takes place this weekend, and Ms Corcoran told it promises to be a highlight of the season.
“All proceeds from the Christmas Craft Fair will directly support the Greater Chernobyl Cause’s vital humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, a country facing immense challenges due to ongoing conflict,” she said.
The annual Greater Chernobyl Cause Christmas craft fair will take place this Sunday, November 30, running from 11am to 5pm at Marian Hall, Ballinhassig.
