The Echo is to support the vital work of Cork Penny Dinners this Christmas season as it announces the service as its 2025 Christmas Charity Appeal beneficiary.

Christmas can be a difficult time for many, and for those in need,it is even harder.

In 2024, supported the work of the centre by pledging 100 Christmas dinners to their annual appeal, at a cost of €2,000.

This year, The Echo is proud to support the vital work of Cork Penny Dinners by once again pledging 100 Christmas dinners on behalf of The Echo and EchoLive.ie readers.

“Penny Dinners is there for those most in need every day of the year, but Christmas places extra demand and pressure on services, so it deserves all of our support,” said John O’Mahony, the editor of The Echo and the Irish Examiner.

The Echo has a longstanding relationship with Penny Dinners, and we are delighted again to team up with Caitríona and the team at what is a very busy time.”

Caitríona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners said: “Penny Dinners is open 365 days of the year, including on Christmas, and we are more than grateful to The Echo and to everyone who has donated to us throughout the years.

“For the people who come here, it is a lifeline, and we couldn’t do that without the support we are given, and The Echo has been a constant support for us down through the years.”

Ms Twomey said: “When that support keeps coming back year-on-year, you know that you will be able to provide a dinner for everyone who comes in that door on Christmas Day or any other day of the year.

“In Penny Dinners, we are fortunate enough to have never had to hold a fundraiser. We have been able to rely on the kindness of donations such as The Echo Christmas Appeal, from the public’s goodwill.”
