Sergeant Trish O’Sullivan told Macroom District Court that 21-year-old Eve Guerin, with an address at Kinlay House, Bob and Joan’s Walk, Roman St, Cork, was charged with three counts of theft relating to three separate incidents.
The court heard that on March 18, 2025, Guerin went to the Aldi supermarket in Grange, Cork, where she took items of alcohol with a total value of €52.41 and left the store with them without paying for the goods, which were not recovered.
On May 31, 2025, at 5.15pm, she went into Dunnes Stores in Killarney, Co Kerry, where she filled a trolley with clothes worth €750. Guerin pushed the trolley out of the store without paying for the goods, but was challenged by a security officer. Guerin refused to return to the store and left the trolley and fled the scene. The goods were recovered.
Later on the same day, at 6.40pm, Guerin went into Dunnes Stores in Macroom, Co Cork, where she loaded a trolley with clothes and groceries with a total value of €220.60 and again left the store with the items but did not pay for them. On this occasion, the goods were not recovered. Guerin was identified via CCTV on each occasion and made admissions when the charges were put to her.
Guerin, who is already in custody in relation to other matters, said she had alcohol issues which she intended to deal with and was no longer in contact with others who were involved in stealing.
She told the court she intended to train as a hairdresser and enrol in a back-to-education course when she is released from prison in March next year.
Judge Joanne Carroll said by committing the same offence in Macroom a short time after she left Killarney, Guerin had shown a “lack of remorse and conscience”.
For the Macroom theft, Guerin was sentenced to four months in prison to run concurrently.
For the Killarney theft she was sentenced to four months, suspended for two years.
For the Aldi theft, she was placed on a probation bond for 18 months with conditions. She was also ordered to repay Dunnes Stores the outstanding €220 within two years.
