A man in his 50s was arrested by Gardaí after a man in his 30s died following a stabbing in Hollyhill in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed a fatal stabbing in Hollyhill this weekend to come forward, as a postmortem examination on the deceased has been completed.

A man in his 50s was arrested by Gardaí after a man in his 30s died following a stabbing in Hollyhill in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 38-year-old man was treated at the scene before being taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH), where he was later pronounced dead. He has been named locally as Mark O’Connell, originally from Farranree.

A second man, aged in his mid-50s, was arrested at the scene, and is being detained at a garda station in Cork under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

In a statement on Monday afternoon, gardaí said that they “continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a male aged in his 30’s following an incident in Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 16 November 2025.” They explained: “Shortly after 4.30am on Sunday, Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following reports of a disturbance involving two individuals at Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City.

“A male aged in his 30’s was conveyed to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. A post-mortem examination has been completed, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

“A male aged in his 50s continues to be detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at a Garda Station in the Co. Cork area. Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to this incident to come forward.” 

Anyone with available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Hollyville, Hollyhill, Cork City, between 3.30am and 4.30am on Sunday morning is asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.
