A jury of seven men and five women was sworn in to hear the case which is expected to open tomorrow. So far, no background allegations have been outlined.
Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford told the jury panel in advance of the swearing in of the jury: “This is a case that is likely to take in excess of two weeks.
A list of the names of over 90 witnesses – many of them members of An Garda Síochána – was read to the jury panel so that they could satisfy themselves that they did not know any of the parties to the case before being sworn in to hear evidence.
The judge said to the jury: “It is not an easy job but it is a civic duty. From the point of view of the administration of justice it is important that you are committed.”
