A Cork woman who got on the wrong bus and ended up miles away from home was arrested for being intoxicated in public when she realised her mistake.
Sergeant Tom Mulcahy told Clonakilty District Court that Sarah Murphy, aged 49, with an address at The Log Cabins, Main Street, Coachford, Co Cork, was arrested on October 8, 2025, in Clonakilty.
The court heard gardaí received a report of an incident at 6.21pm from a Transport for Ireland bus driver at O’Rahilly Street in Clonakilty.
When gardaí arrived, Murphy said she had got on the wrong bus in Cork and had meant to go to Coachford, not Clonakilty. She was removed from the bus and observed to be in a “highly intoxicated state” and was arrested for her own safety and the safety of others.
The court heard Murphy had one previous conviction from 2023 for drink-driving. Her solicitor Colette McCarthy said Murphy had issues with alcohol for the past 10 years and the problem had become worse after the covid pandemic.
Judge Joanne Carroll admitted Murphy to a probation bond on condition she cooperates with the Probation Service, avails of alcohol addiction treatment and with mental health services.
