Nature, climate, and sustainability event

A focus session for individuals and community groups across Cork will take place in Mahon next month.

The event, aimed at encouraging participants to explore the information and training needs in relation to nature, climate, and sustainability in the community, will be held at Mahon Community Centre on November 12. Hosted by Cork City Partnership, and facilitated by the Environmental Forum, the information session, entitled “A Greener World Begins With You”, will kick off at 7pm.

Mahon Tidy Towns bazaar

Representatives at Mahon Tidy Towns are reminding members of the public to register interest now for their Christmas bazaar.

The Mahon Tidy Towns Christmas Bazaar will take place on December 14, from 1pm to 4pm, at the Mahon Community Centre.

On the day there will be a spot prize raffle, with tickets priced from €3.

In a post shared on social media, a spokesperson for the group said that several stalls have since registered to take part, with anyone interested in setting up a table at the event urged to do so in advance.

“We have a couple of tables left,” the spokesperson said.

“This will be a great event; Christmas gift ideas or something just to treat yourself, festive music, tea and coffee, and raffle prizes.”

Community climate action fund

Independent councillor for the Cork City South-East ward, Kieran McCarthy, is calling on local community climate projects to apply for funding under the community climate action fund.

In a post shared on social media, Mr McCarthy said that up to €100,000 is available to projects aiming to make the Mahon/Blackrock community more climate-friendly.

“Cork City Council is inviting community groups, residents’ associations, and sports clubs to express their interest in the community climate action fund,” said Mr McCarthy.

“This fund supports capital-only projects that help build a low-carbon, climate resilient Cork.

“Grants of up to €100,000 are available for projects that align with one or more of the [designated] themes.”

Themes in which projects can apply for funding include energy efficiency and renewable energy; active travel and sustainable transport; composting, food growing, and waste reduction; pollinator-friendly planting and habitat creation; and forest schools, community gardens, and resilience projects.
