'The spuds nearly went flying out the window': Cork syndicate collect lotto cheque for over €164k

The group from Cork matched five numbers and the bonus in the September 20 Lotto draw.

A National Lottery pot, worth more than €164,000, was claimed this week by a winning syndicate in Cork.

The group from Cork, which matched five numbers and the bonus in the September 20 Lotto draw, claimed winnings worth €164,156 from the National Lottery’s Winners Room.

The syndicate, which purchased their winning ticket from Lidl Ballyvolane, were among several winners claiming prizes this week, however, the group from Cork went home with the largest cheque of the week.

The head of the syndicate, who have chosen to remain anonymous, said they “hadn’t checked the ticket until the next evening, when I heard there’d been a win in Cork”.

“My partner was at the kitchen sink peeling spuds for dinner when I called her over to read out the numbers,” they said.

“When she realised we’d won, well, the spuds nearly went flying out the window. It was absolutely priceless.”

The group described the win as a complete shock, but one that quickly turned into excitement and plans for the future.

One member of the syndicate said they “always dreamed of going on a cruise, and now it’s finally going to happen”.

Another member added that “there are a few home improvements I’ve been putting off for years, so I can’t wait to finally get them done”.

Others winners that collected payments this week hailed from Kerry, picking up a cheque worth €100,000 and Tipperary, claiming a cheque worth €45,000.
