Cork city’s Mercy University Hospital has announced an immediate closure of the hospital to visitors on foot of advice from their infection control team.
Some visits on compassionate grounds and specific circumstances will be permitted, with clinical nurse managers to coordinate this.
In a statement issued this afternoon, a spokesperson said that Mercy University Hospital “has temporarily closed its facilities to general visitors, effective immediately.
“This decision has been made on the advice of the hospital's infection prevention and control team to safeguard the health and well-being of patients and staff.
“The hospital understands the importance of family support during a patient's stay. Therefore, visiting on compassionate grounds and in particular circumstances to support patients can be arranged directly through the clinical nurse manager on the respective ward.
“Mercy University Hospital thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation during this time as it prioritises patient safety.”
It comes less than a week after the HSE issued a statement cautioning that the Emergency Department at the Mercy University Hospital was experiencing very high levels of activity and urging the public to only attend for urgent cases.
