Emergency services attended the scene of a fire at the Douglas Village Shopping Centre in Cork this afternoon.

The incident, involving a single vehicle's engine that caught alight, occurred at approximately 2pm.

The vehicle was located on the first floor of the car park within the shopping complex.

Speaking to The Echo, Victor Shine, second officer with Cork City Fire Brigade, said the fire triggered the alarm system of the centre, alerting emergency services to the incident, and the facility was subsequently evacuated.

“Shortly after 2pm, the engine compartment of a single vehicle on the first floor of the car park of the shopping complex caught on fire," said Mr Shine.

“The alarm was activated and the fire brigade was notified. The security [of the shopping centre] started the evacuation process and the gardaí were notified.

“Three appliances from Cork City Fire Brigade responded and they dealt with the fire quickly," he added.

“They contained it to the engine compartment in 10 minutes or so.

“The vehicle is now waiting to be recovered by a tow truck,” he added.

“No injuries were reported.”
