A young man with many previous convictions has been rehabilitating in custody and the sentencing judge for his latest charge said: “This is the best I have ever seen you – and I have seen you often.”

Mathew Ginnifer, 41, of Cork Simon Community, laughed at that comment when he appeared at Cork District Court by video link from prison.

Judge Mary Dorgan also laughed and said it was good to see the defendant laughing. She wished him well and said she would not increase his period in custody.

She imposed a two-month sentence on him for having Alprazolam without a prescription on August 13 2024 at Dunbar Street, Cork, but this sentence will run concurrently with what he is already serving.
