The HSE has been urged to prioritise funds for the expansion of Kinsale Community Hospital, that would see the number of beds more than double.

The hospital currently has the capacity to accommodate up to 40 residents for short-stay convalescence or respite care, as well as long-term care options. It also facilitates outpatient appointments for patients with a consultant geriatrician who attends on a monthly basis.

Fianna Fáil Cork South West TD Christopher O’Sullivan has said that investment into Kinsale Community Hospital is needed to increase the facility’s bed capacity to 100.

Mr O’Sullivan said this level of investment would greatly improve both inpatient and outpatient services, while easing pressure on staff and patients as the region’s population grows.

He said it was important that bed capacity at the hospital increases as soon as possible, allowing the facility to continue providing “extraordinary” care to its future patients.

“The HSE owns two acres next to the hospital which would be perfect for an extension to accommodate extra beds,” said Mr O’Sullivan.

“Kinsale Community hospital is an amazing asset to the Kinsale hinterlands.

“The care patients get is extraordinary, the staff are incredibly hard working and dedicated, but the hospital needs more acute beds and kite beds for older people,” he added.

“In April, €160,000 was secured for the refurbishment and extension of the 40-bed Older Persons Nursing Unit to significantly enhance the care and comfort for our senior citizens.

“I want to see that number expanded to ensure Kinsale Community Hospital’s ability to provide its high standards of care to the people in and around Kinsale for years to come.”
