A road traffic accident outside of a Cork cheese factory was down to an error of judgement by one of the drivers involved, the district court has heard.
Court presenter Sergeant Eimear O’Connell told Bandon District Court that Cameron Forbes, aged 22 of Baurnahulla, Drimoleague, Co Cork, was the driver of a Skoda Fabia car heading east from Ballineen towards Bandon on the R586 road on November 16, 2024.
The court heard that as Forbes approached the Carbery cheese factory at Dromidiclogh, he came up behind a Ford Focus that was about to turn left into the factory and struck the vehicle in front before it had managed to complete the manoeuvre. CCTV from the cheese factory recorded the incident and the court heard that Forbes had no previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Colette McCarthy said that the carpark for the cheese factory is on the right hand side of the road while the factory itself is on the left. She said that Forbes was not driving “at speed” and thought the Focus was going to turn right into the carpark using the turning lane but instead turned left towards the factory and he collided with it.
Ms McCarthy said that Forbes was was fully insured, made an incorrect judgement on the day, and was pleading guilty to careless driving.
Judge Joanne Carroll said she accepted Forbes had made an error of judgement but added that he could not assume what other motorists were going to do. He was convicted and fined €200 and given four months to pay the fine.
