Mersey Beatles come to Cork

The Beatles never quite made it to the northside of Cork.

However, four John, Paul, George, and Ringo lookalikes and soundalikes are set to bring Beatlemania to Cork with the annual show by the hugely popular Mersey Beatles at the Everyman on MacCurtain St on November 5.

The band, featuring the musical talents of Mark Bloor, Steven Howard, and Brian Ambrose (John, Paul, and Ringo) and Craig McGown (George), are going to take the Cork audience back to the 1960s for the 60th anniversary of classic albums Help! and Rubber Soul.

The venue said: “Get ready for a 60th anniversary celebration of The Beatles’ seminal 1965 albums Help! and Rubber Soul and their era defining Shea Stadium concert — the world’s first ever stadium Rock and Roll show.”

Fans will hear all the hits from this era of The Beatles with the album played in full followed by a journey through later material. Tickets can be found on the Everyman website.

Impasse comes to Cork

Choreographer, performer, and recent Aosdána inductee Mufutau Yusuf returns to Dance Cork Firkin Crane on September 26 and 27 with his duet Impasse, following a solo run of the work in 2024. This is the first Irish date of an international tour that opened in Vienna at Impulstanz, continuing on to Cork, Tipperary Dance Festival, The Lowry in Manchester, and National Theatre of Panama, as part of Prisma, Panama’s International Festival of Contemporary Dance.

Impasse is described as a “compelling exploration of ethnicity, identity, and the experience of the Black diaspora”.

The venue said: “In this duet, choreographer Yusuf — along with co-performer Shafiki Sseggayi — confronts the biased narratives etched onto Black bodies throughout history. These narratives, steeped in cultural imperialism, violence, exploitation, marginalisation, and powerlessness, are laid bare, with raw physicality and emotional intensity. By challenging the historical racial projections of blackness — its crudeness, threat, sexuality, rage and immorality — the performance unveils its power, grace, sensuality, tenderness, intelligence and love.”

Ahead of the performance, Mr Yusuf said: “I’m very happy to begin the Irish leg of this tour at Dance Cork Firkin Crane.

“I feel it’s important that people across Ireland are exposed to dance works of this nature — a work that frames the experience of the Black diaspora through striking visuals and movement.”

Everyman’s artist afternoon

The Everyman’s regular artists’ afternoon takes place tomorrow and all arts’ workers and artists are invited to attend.

The Everyman bar will be open for free tea, coffee, and chats on Wednesday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

The venue said: “Feel free to bring your lunch. There is no set format for the afternoon; all you need to do is turn up at some point and be prepared to chat to other artists and arts workers.

“All we ask is that you have a conversation with at least one person who is new to you, or whose work you do not know.

“Everyone is welcome and if you need to bring children with you, they are welcome; just make sure to book a ticket for them, too.”
