Mayor of the County of Cork, councillor Mary Linehan Foley, said it is '"critically important" that Cork County Council ensures there is sufficient land zoned to deliver on the housing and population targets.

Cork County Council is inviting members of the public to put forward suggestions for lands that are suitable for zoning for residential use.

The call comes following the publication of the ‘Ministerial Guidelines on Revised National Planning Framework (NPF) Implementation: Housing Growth Requirements’ by Government, which set out a requirement for increased annual housing growth by the local authority.

The guidelines, published yesterday, also called for an ‘additional provision’ mechanism to support the zoning of additional lands in areas where it can be justified.

In response to these new guidelines, Cork County Council is now inviting the public, landowners, and homebuilders, to put forward suggestions for lands that are suitable for zoning for residential use, including greenfield and brownfield/infill/regeneration sites.

Objectives

All lands put forward must meet the objectives of the guidelines in terms of contributing to the acceleration of housing delivery over the next 10 years.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, councillor Mary Linehan Foley said it is “critically important that Cork County Council ensures we have sufficient land zoned to deliver on the housing and population targets set out in the NPF and the recently published Section 28 Guidelines”.

“I strongly encourage landowners, homebuilders, and the public to get involved in the process by making submissions that identify lands with the potential to accelerate housing delivery over the next decade,” said Ms Murrell.
