A Cork man caught racing against his brother on a major road in the early hours of the morning has been disqualified from driving.

Giving evidence, Garda Pat Harrington told Mallow District Court that he was driving from Cork towards Mallow after midnight in the early morning of August 21, 2024.

Garda Harrington said that he observed two vehicles ahead of him heading north on the main Cork to Mallow road, overtaking a car and a rigid truck at very high speed on a bend.

Garda Harrington said he followed the two vehicles, which he estimated were travelling at more than 130km/h, and observed them racing each other along the main road.

Garda Harrington said that he eventually managed to stop the two cars near Mallow and discovered the drivers were two brothers, one of whom was Tommy O’Neill, age 25, of Batt Donegan Place, Charleville, Co Cork.

The two drivers were issued with a penalty notice. However, Tommy O’Neill failed to pay the fine and did not turn up in court.

Judge Colm Roberts said that, given the circumstances, a fine was not an appropriate penalty and he disqualified O’Neill from driving for six months.
