The planned upgrade is part of Iarnród Éireann’s national car park expansion programme.

Cork County Council has approved a planning application lodged by Iarnród Éireann for a significant upgrade of the facilities at Millstreet Railway Station.

The plan makes provision for an additional 46 parking spaces, bringing the total to 82. These include seven spaces for future use as electric-vehicle charging points, and five spaces for people with reduced mobility.

The works will also include the creation of a bus set-down/interchange facility and 10 bicycle parking spaces with an associated shelter.

The planned upgrade is part of Iarnród Éireann’s national car park expansion programme.

Now that planning for the upgrade of the Nork Cork station has been granted, the procurement process will get underway, with a contract expected to be awarded to the successful bidder before the end of the year.

It is envisaged that the upgrade works will commence in the spring of next year, and will take nine months to complete.

Speaking to The Echo, Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said confirmation that the council has rubber-stamped the project was positive news.

“Millstreet is a station that is very well utilised, both from a Kerry side of things and a Cork side of things,” he said.

“To improve the parking situation there, first of all, is very important.

“The pedestrian access from the town is going to be improved as part of it, as well, so that is a huge positive.

“It is very welcome news, and it is good to see that Iarnród Éireann are investing in stations like Millstreet.”
