Cork City AC, the club founded by Irish Olympians Rob and Marian Heffernan, has been selected as the latest recipient of the Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award.

Since it was established in 2022, Cork City AC has grown to almost 200 members, many of whom compete regularly on the athletics circuit around the country.

Cork City AC aims to provide coaching in all athletics disciplines in a positive and nurturing environment, preparing members for competition, while using a holistic approach to care for their physical and mental health through athletics.

A big emphasis at the club is put on team spirit and morale, in both success and adversity, with a mission to inspire and motivate all members regardless of age or ability.

Eoghan Murphy, general manager of the Cork International Hotel, said it’s “inspiring” to see a club that was founded only three short years ago grow so quickly and become so popular.

“This growth underlines Rob and Marian’s belief that athletics is a fantastic option for children that can provide a gateway into many other sports and activities.

“Cork City AC is a hugely deserving recipient of the Community Spirit Award, embodying all that is positive about the city and our young people and I’d like to commend all of those involved in the club for their ongoing dedication,” he added.

The Community Spirit Awards highlight the efforts of people who are continuously dedicating their time and efforts to the benefit of others.

The awards are run monthly, with one monthly winner and one overall annual winner. Nominees can be submitted any time.

Anyone can nominate a volunteer or group that is located in Cork city or the southside of Cork county. The only requirement is that they give their time voluntarily and without financial reward.

The judging panel for the Community Spirit Awards is made up of a mixture of representatives from the public and private sector within the community.

Nominations are open for next month’s awards at tinyurl.com/3fjhm6ne.
