Cork councillor's concerns over ‘foul smell’ from pump house

Cllr Horgan said the foul smell continues to pervade people’s homes and gardens.

Issues at the Mahon pump house are resulting in unbearable smells for residents in the area, a Labour councillor for the area has said.

Councillor for the South East ward, Peter Horgan, told The Echo that despite assertions from Uisce Éireann that the issue had been resolved, it has been a problem many times before and would continue to cause issues unless there is a permanent solution.

He said: “This has been going on for some time, and it is simply not fair on residents in the Mahon area.

"The foul smell continues to pervade people’s homes and gardens, depending on the wind flow.”

Mr Horgan submitted a report on the issue to Uisce Éireann recently.

The utility told him: “The local wastewater department has confirmed there was an issue with the septiox dosing. The level in the tank is monitored by Uisce Éireann. However, the signal seemed to be lost.

“There was a delivery due on Friday, August 1, which was delayed until August 6, so there was no dosing over that weekend. This issue is now resolved.”

Mr Horgan disputed the last part of the response, saying: “I have categorically stated to Uisce Éireann that it is not resolved, but it must be resolved.

“This is a matter of public health in the air for residents across Mahon and Blackrock.

“I’ll continue to push for this to be fixed permanently.”
