Robert Siivar appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court today on Saturday.

A 59-year-old man arrested has appeared in court charged in connection with the seizure of approximately €2m of cannabis at the Port Of Cork.

Robert Slivar, 59, of no fixed abode but originally from Ivanic, Croatia appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Saturday.

Mr Slivar was charged with cannabis possession and possession of cannabis for sale or supply at the Port of Cork on July 27, contrary to section 3 and section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Detective Garda Ryan Dillon, with the accused man giving no reply after each charge.

Mr Slivar applied for bail through his solicitor, Diarmuid Kelleher.

Garda Inspector Ray Dunne said gardaí were objecting to bail on grounds of the seriousness of the charges, the strength of the evidence and fears the defendant poses a flight risk.

Judge John King refused bail and remanded Mr Slivar in custody to appear again at a special sitting of Cork District Court next Wednesday.

The judge requested that a statement of means be provided before deciding on the granting of free legal aid.
