Barryscourt Castle in Carrigtwohill is one of OPW sites that will be free to under-18s throughout the month of August.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced free admission for anyone under 18 to heritage sites across the country for the month of August.
Under-18s will be able to learn about their heritage during the summer and without any cost.
Cork sites include Annes Grove Gardens, a horticultural paradise in North Cork; Barryscourt Castle, an Irish tower house bearing the scars of battle; Cahervagliar Ringfort, former fortress of the kings; Castlelyons Carmelite Priory, which began under the patronage of one of Cork’s wealthiest families; and Charles Fort, a star-shaped military fortress that has stood for centuries.
Other sites of interest around the county include Doneraile Court and Estate, North Cork’s real-life ‘Downton Abbey’; Fota Arboretum and Gardens, an island oasis of rare and exotic flora; Maughanasilly Stone Row, a monument set within the picturesque surrounds of Knockbreteen; the island garden at Ilnacullin — Garinish Island; the Michael Collins birthplace; Rock Abbey Dominican House in Glanworth, a Dominican Abbey situated within a rich historical tapestry of monuments; and Sherkin Franciscan Friary, a monument with picturesque views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Launching this initiative, Kevin Moran, minister of state for the OPW, said: “I am delighted to announce that all under-18s will have free entry to OPW heritage sites this August, as part of a new pilot scheme.
“We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments, and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources.
“I encourage all our young people to get out and explore their local heritage this summer. Our sites are the perfect backdrop to meet friends, explore a fascinating site, and have a treat at the local cafe.”
