Cork native O'Mahony appointed editor for ‘The Echo’ and the ‘Irish Examiner’ titles

A Cork native, Mr O’Mahony has been with the Irish Examiner for more than 25 years.
John O’Mahony has been appointed the new editor for The Echo and the Irish Examiner.
Karen O’Donoghue, managing director of the publications, confirmed the announcement to staff yesterday, saying the appointment was a key step towards combining editorial operations across both titles.
He succeeds Gráinne McGuinness as editor of The Echo and Tom Fitzpatrick as editor of the Irish Examiner.
A Cork native, Mr O’Mahony has been with the Irish Examiner for more than 25 years. He spent 20 years on the media outlet’s news desk first as Assistant News Editor and then as News Editor. He was appointed Managing Editor Content in 2020.
“This appointment marks a significant moment for both the Irish Examiner and The Echo,” Ms O’Donoghue said.
“John brings, not only a wealth of experience and editorial integrity, but also a deep understanding of the communities we serve and the evolving needs of our readers.
"I’m confident John’s appointment will help us deepen our connection with audiences and advertisers, strengthen our editorial independence and lead both titles into an exciting new chapter.” Mr O’Mahony said it is an honour and privilege to take up the position of Group Editor of these two great titles.
“I’m very much looking forward to continuing to work with our very talented and dedicated teams, not just in editorial, but across other desks and departments as we continue to strive to serve the people of Cork, Munster and Ireland - as we have done since 1841.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Tom Fitzpatrick and Gráinne McGuinness for their vision, commitment and support.”
