The councillor wants two Local Link bus services to connect rural villages to towns in East Cork.

A Cork County Councillor is working to try and establish two new Local Link bus services to connect rural villages to towns in East Cork.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Patrick Mulcahy raised a motion at a recent meeting of the East Cork Municipal District.

In the motion, Mr Mulcahy asked the East Cork Municipal District to write to the National Transport Authority seeking approval of two new Local Link routes from Youghal town centre to Midleton Train station.

This will include a northern route including via Mogeely and Dungourney and a southern route including via Ballymacoda, Ladysbridge, Shanagarry and Cloyne.

Mr Mulcahy has created a petition to assess the local demand for the project.

He then intends to write to the National Transport Authority with this petition to help try and get this proposal over the line.

Speaking to The Echo, Mr Mulcahy said:

“It was something that was brought to my attention earlier in the year, the lack of accessibility for rural areas to get to the bigger connected towns.

“People have been onto me looking for a better transport service to be provided locally from local villages. I got support from a number of colleagues and it has been well received within the community as well."

Mr Mulcahy added:

“For example, you could run a service in the morning looking to get people that are working in the area, to connect them either to Youghal or Midleton, wherever they are working.

“There is very much positivity and support from people on the ground for the project as well. I am reaching out to community groups currently as well.

"We are just trying to see where numbers are at and see how much interest there would be as well. I think there will be a demand for the service.

“As a member of the roads and transportation committee at Cork County Council, we need to be pushing connecting local or using local transportation to connect the villages and the towns within our area.

“It is hugely important that we can give that facility to people who are living in rural Ireland, to connect them to our urban towns.”
