Sergeant John Dineen said DPP directions in the case were awaited.

A man accused of posing as an ISPCA inspector checking the welfare of a dog belonging to an elderly woman and then burgling her home agreed to a prosecution application to remand him in custody until July 2.

Judge Mary Dorgan adjourned the case against David Cronin, aged 59, until that date on Wednesday.

Sergeant John Dineen said DPP directions in the case were awaited.

David Cronin of St Vincent’s hostel, Anglesea Terrace, Cork, faces a burglary charge arising out of the incident.

David Cronin did not apply for bail.

A woman who is charged with the same crime, did apply for bail. She was not before court on Wednesday.

It was alleged by Garda James Bird that both defendants were captured on CCTV entering Corcoran’s Quay in Blackpool, Cork, shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

The allegation was that both defendants entered the building under false pretences, that there were complaints about a dog in the elderly woman’s home and that they were checking on the welfare of the dog as workers from the ISPCA.

“It will be alleged that (the female co-accused) spoke to and distracted the injured party as (David Cronin) checked the house and stole a pink purse with the money in it,” Garda Bird said.

It was alleged that he left with €2,515 in notes.
