Gardaí in West Cork have issued an appeal for witnesses to what was described as a "serious injury" road traffic collision that occurred in the Bantry area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A garda spokesperson said the male pedestrian, aged in his late 30s was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 20s, did not require medical attention.

The road was closed for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct an examination of the scene, which has been completed and the road has reopened.

The spokesperson said gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 2.30am and 3.00am are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí," said the spokesperson.

"Investigations are ongoing," said the spokesperson.
