Woman played loud music on her phone as she entered Cork city garda station

Loud music was played by a 42-year-old woman as she arrived at the public office of Anglesea Street garda station where she ended up spitting in the direction of a member of An Garda Síochána.

Stalioniene Neringa, with an address at Rutland Square, White Street, Cork, pleaded guilty to several charges when she appeared at Cork District Court.

Judge Mary Dorgan imposed a nine-day jail term on the accused backdated to take account of that number of days that the defendant had been on remand.

A four-month suspended jail sentence was also imposed.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis described what happened: “On March 14 she entered the public office at Anglesea Street garda station playing loud music on her mobile phone causing a disturbance.

“Garda Richard Caverly asked her to turn off the music and she complied. He returned to dealing with the member of the public at the public office counter.

“However, Ms Neringa approached this person and spat in his direction.

“Garda Caverly challenged her over her behaviour and she turned to spit at him but he intercepted before she could do so. She had to be restrained and placed in handcuffs.

“She continued to actively resist arrest and had to be removed from the person at whom she spat . She was transferred to Bridewell garda station.” Eddie Burke said, “This was unusual behaviour from a person at 42 years of age. From Lithuania, she came to Ireland at 23 years of age and has been over and back a lot since then. 

She apologises for her behaviour.” Judge Dorgan said, “The guards were just doing their work and it was very disrespectful to them to say the least.” 

She pleaded guilty to engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour and obstruction of Garda Caverly.
