A Cork motorist has been arrested for driving in excess of the speed limit and while under the influence of an intoxicant.
Gardaí in Cork stopped the driver, who was travelling southbound on the M8 Mitchelstown, yesterday.
It was detected that the motorist was travelling at a speed of 167km/h in a 120km/h zone.
Upon stopping, it was further found that the driver was in possession of cannabis and was under the influence of an intoxicant.
The motorist was subsequently arrested, with a court date to follow.
In a post shared on social media, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána reminded motorists of the dangers of speeding.
“While driving, motorists should keep in mind that speed is biggest contributory factor in road deaths in Ireland according to the Road Safety Authority,” the spokesperson said.
“Arriving late is better than not at all."
