A security man was punched with force into the stomach when he tried to stop a man from stealing a bottle of vodka.
43-year-old William O’Driscoll of no fixed address pleaded guilty to multiple counts of theft and one of assaulting a security officer who approached him as he stole the bottle of vodka.
Sergeant John Kelleher said the violent incident occurred on December 12 2024 at Merchants Quay, Cork.
On that occasion he selected a bottle of vodka valued €31 and exited the store without offering payment.
When the security man asked for the property to be returned, William O’Driscoll aggressively punched him in the stomach. The bottle of vodka was returned afterwards.
Around this time he carried out thefts at Dunnes Stores and Centra in Cork city and was found in an intoxicated condition.
Judge Treasa Kelly imposed a total sentence of three months for the assault and the shoplifting offences at Cork District Court.
