“Vital services” will be provided as part of a fit-out for a Cork hospital extension, which will see a funding injection of more than €7m following the publication of the 2025 HSE Capital Plan, a Cork TD has said.

The plan, announced earlier this month by health minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, will see €103.81m out of €1.33bn spread across a range of healthcare facilities in Cork — with €7.25m allocated to Mallow General Hospital.

The funding, specifically provided for the fit-out of the first floor extension that was built during covid, is to provide for a 24-bed in-patient ward.

The funding will also provide for the fit-out of the ground floor to provide for an out-patient/day clinic ward with 10 clinical rooms and the establishment of an obesity clinic.

The new building at Mallow General Hospital has four floors, with two already in use.

Fine Gael Cork North West TD John Paul O’Shea said that the funding will enable the hospital to provide “vital services” to those across Cork and beyond.

“This is a very positive investment for Mallow General Hospital by our Government,” said Mr O’Shea.

“This extension was built during covid times, and it’s great now to see this part of the project moving forward.

“The different wards are very busy in Mallow General Hospital, and [it] has a very busy local injury unit open to the public each day,” he added.

“Mallow General Hospital plays an integral role in the provision of acute hospital services to the population of Cork and indeed catchment areas outside of the county,” he added.

“I welcome the further investment in the hospital for 2025 and, once operational, the entire new building will be providing many vital services to the people of the area.

“The staff there do great work and there is always such positive feedback from the patients — I look forward to this continuing into the future.”

Mallow is is part of the Cork University Hospital group.

The facility is an acute general hospital providing in-patient, outpatient, and day patient services — including acute in-patient medicine, a medical assessment unit, an injury unit, an endoscopy suite, and theatre.

Services are supported by radiology, laboratory, physiotherapy, cardiac technician, heart failure clinic, pulmonary function lab, sleep studies service, speech and language therapy, and dietetics.
