A community group are hoping to set up Cobh’s first ever theatre, having already secured donations, and are appealing to the community to help.

Great Island Theatre, a newly established company limited by guarantee, announced their plans to create an inclusive venue for the performing arts in Cobh at a launch event in the Commodore Hotel on Thursday night.

The town currently lacks a dedicated performing arts venue, and the new theatre will serve as a home for a range of groups involved in theatre, music, and dance.

The Old Parochial Hall, a building that was originally built in 1927 for use by the community, has been vacant for some time, and Great Island Theatre plan to purchase and restore it.

Once renovated, the proposed theatre will include a 100-seat auditorium, lighting and audio systems, and ample parking, and aims to host a diverse programme of events, including drama for adults and children, musicals, pantomimes, cinematography and film screenings, comedy nights, poetry readings, and writers’ groups.

The organisation is currently seeking funding to cover the purchase and renovation of the Old Parochial Hall.

Fundraising is already in motion, and the group thanked local individuals, businesses, and organisations who have contributed, including Cork County Council and Cobh Credit Union.

Eoin Gilley, speaking on behalf of the Great Island Theatre steering committee, said: “Now we’re asking the community, near and far, to step up and help bring this project to life.

“Whether you live in Cobh, have family ties here, or simply believe in the power of the arts, your support will help breathe new life into a historic building and create something truly special for future generations.”

The steering committee for the theatre company is made up of community members including Fianna Fáil councillor for Cobh Dominic Finn, as well as Mr Gilley, Pat Mahony, Liam O’Doherty, and David McCall.
